Getting There, and Away
The most important section of an old school Lonely Planet Guide Book
Long ago… when the dinosaurs roamed and I began my travels, there was no internet. For every location I visited, I’d take along the relevant “Lonely Planet” for the region. It would give a summary of every city in the region, why you’d go, what to do, where to stay, and most importantly, each city had a section called Getting There and Away. This was the only way to know how to get to wherever it was you wanted to go. Yes… I travelled before google maps and lived to tell the tales.
At one point I thought I’d name the publication this. Everyone dreams of travel. I know this because as someone who travels all the time I am constantly told how lucky I am. How “One Day” they’ll travel too.
Everyone has a different dream location. Most feel that whatever the trip they wish they could do is out of reach. What I can tell you is that it isn’t. There are so many ways to see the world, from the well-known “all inclusive” sun holiday, to volunteer trips, school trips, work trips, home stays, hostels, working holidays, digital-nomading, house-swapping, care-taking, pet-sitting… there is a trip waiting for every person.
It is my goal to inspire you to take that trip. Every week I’ll share resources, tips, tricks, and stories from my own travels and those of others I have met along the way. I want to help you in getting there… and also lure you away from the everyday responsibilities that are so hard to leave behind.
All I ask in return, is a postcard when you get there.
